The National Federation of SubPostmasters meets its aims and objectives by:
Pay and Conditions The NFSP is the only organisation recognised by Post Office Ltd (POL) to negotiate on behalf of subpostmasters nationwide. A team of negotiators works throughout the year to improve the pay and conditions of service for subpostmasters. The NFSP negotiates with POL on the payment for all services and products transacted over a sub post office counter. We also work closely with POL on a range of other issues including post office security, operational systems and technology.
Advice, Information, Support and Representation The NFSP provides a range of services offering support, advice and information to members. The monthly magazine, The Subpostmaster, provides up-to-date information on issues affecting subpostmasters. A 24-hour helpline gives advice on employment issues. Representation and guidance is available in the event of disciplinary action or disputes with POL. Subpostmasters also have access to local support through their branches and Executive Officers. The NFSP also runs a benevolent fund providing financial support to subpostmasters in need.
Commercial Most subpostmasters run another business alongside their post office. The NFSP assists subpostmasters’ retail businesses by helping with cost saving initiatives, making necessary services available, providing new sales opportunities and improving current ones. Exclusive deals with many business partners are available for NFSP members.
Politics and Public Affairs The NFSP works to ensure that post office issues remain high on the political agenda and the viewpoint of subpostmasters is well recognised in parliamentary debates and inquiries. The NFSP maintains close links with government ministers and works closely with MPs from all political parties. We respond to consultations from bodies ranging from select committees to the postal services regulator. NFSP maintains ongoing relationships with a range of stakeholders from Postcomm and Consumer Focus to Citizens Advice, Age Concern and the Commission for Rural Communities.
Campaigning Campaigning around specific issues and for particular events is an important part of our work. In 2004 we conducted a Bank at Your Post Office campaign designed to put pressure on the major banking groups to allow their current account holders post office access. Our Manifesto was produced in the run-up to the 2005 General Election. In 2006 we successfully campaigned against the government’s decision to withdraw the Post Office card account, handing in a petition of over four million signatures to 10 Downing Street calling on the government to safeguard the card account and the future of the network.
Research We commission, conduct, analyse and advise on research on post office related issues. Recent research projects commissioned by the NFSP include a detailed study on subpostmaster income.
