Newly-refurbished Cranleigh, Surrey sub-post office gets VIP opening

11 May 2017

The Mayor of Waverley Cllr Chris Storey yesterday (May 10) officially opened the fully modernised Cranleigh Post Office and store, 41 High Street, Cranleigh, GU6 8AP.

New subpostmaster Pankaj Bahl, known to his customers as Victor, has completely refitted the Post Office and store selling cards, stationery, gifts and party ware.

Pankaj, who is very community-minded invited pupils from Cranleigh C of E Primary School to the opening event and made a donation to the school. Sweets, balloons and refreshments were offered to customers.

This is Pankaj’s first Post Office, but he has a Londis convenience store in Horsham and had one in Guildford until earlier this year, and also had a franchise of petrol stations. Mr Bahl is a Chartered Accountant and had a long 25 career with companies like IBM, Hitachi before embarking on a retail business career four years ago. He has taken over from Don Dhanjal, who was postmaster at Cranleigh for 22 years.

Post Office services are now provided from four modern counters. There are three main counters – one full-screened ‘fortress’ and two open-plan. There is also a Post Office service point alongside the retail counter, offering selected services. Also, a conversation room allows private conversations about the wide range of financial services that the Post Office offers including mortgages, savings, insurances and banking.
